NBA Draft 2014: Andrew Wiggins Too Soft To Be A Superstar? Shy Canadian Hoops Phenom Does Not Have The Typical ‘Swagger’ But He Has The Skills

Andrew Wiggins is the most hyped Canadian basketball player ever. He recently turned 19 and playing his freshman year as a Kansas Jayhawk. In three months, he might be picked up by an NBA team and become a superstar. Is he ready for it?

There's no knock on his talent. Andrew Wiggins is called 'Maple Jordan' as a combination of his Canadian citizenship and remarkable athleticism that is compared with the greatest player of all time.

He was a little different from most of the other young superstars, specifically the one that was drafted 11 years ago.  Even at 18 years old it was clear that LeBron James wanted the spotlight. Some of his statements from an Inside Hoops interview in 2003:

"I think whatever position Coach (Paul) Silas wants to put me at, that will be best for the Cavs. Maybe not center or power forward, I don't think I will be able to play those positions. But one through three I think I can do pretty well for the team. I just bring the determination to win. Me being an unselfish player, I think that can carry on to my teammates. When you have one of the best players on the court being unselfish, I think that transfers to the other players. That's what I think I can bring to the Cavs."

LeBron already referred to himself as 'one of the best players' right from the get-go. In contrast, Wiggins is genuinely in awe. From an ESPN interview, he is avoiding the comparison:

"I've got a long way to go before I can be compared to LeBron and Durant. Those are the best players in the world right now and I'm still in college. So I think it's really unfair to compare me to someone of that caliber. Hopefully one day I can be compared to them, but I think I still have a long way to go before I can be."

Does he have the personality to be 'the man' in the NBA? There's no person who can answer that better than Kansas coach Bill Self. Of all the schools (and there were a lot of them) that tried to recruit him, including all the top programs, he chose Kansas and that was because of the impression he got from Self.

The champion coach shares with The Globe and Mail: "Andrew wants to be good. He's just a mild-mannered, soft-spoken kid. Andrew, he's like the star that doesn't care if he's a star. He just likes to hang out and be a kid. He's one of the few that's not in a hurry to grow up."

Self pauses for a moment before adding: "Even though he knows he's going to have to pretty soon."

Wiggins had a 41 point performance against West Virginia, when their star center Joel Embiid was out. They lost the game as their opponents led convincingly from the start.  Wiggins' tried almost single-handedly to bring their team back but he failed.

Somebody notable was watching: "The kid Andrew Wiggins showed his heart today in a loss," Los Angeles Lakers guard (and fellow Canadian) Steve Nash tweeted. "Watch out."
