The Winnipeg Jets (31-30-9) try to respond from a 3-1 loss vs the Blues, but take on one of the Western Conference's best in the Colorado Avalanche (44-20-5).  The Avs are trying to respond from allowing six goals last night to the Canadiens.

"That's the way sometimes the schedule shakes," forward Blake Wheeler told the Jets website Monday. "It's unfortunate with where we are in the season, the importance of this game, our opponents the last two games. You factor all that in, it's unfortunate, but we're not the only team in the League that has to do that. So I don't buy that as being a good excuse."

Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon is looking to build on his goal from Tuesday, which ended a 10-game drought. He leads all rookies with 23 goals and 53 points, according to NHL.com.

"For an 18-year-old kid. ... I had the luxury of coaching great ones at 18 and 19 years old (Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin) and he's right there," Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said. "He's a special player."

MacKinnon assisted on one of Duchene's goals at Winnipeg in December.

The Jets are mired in a 1-4-3 stretch that has them fading in the Western Conference playoff race. They didn't help their cause Monday, falling 3-1 at St. Louis.

"We're trying to make that playoff push, and I'm just trying to work my hardest," said center Eric O'Dell, who scored for the first time in four games since being recalled from St. John's of the AHL. "I'm getting the opportunities, so hopefully I can continue to play well."
