"Guys need to step up," said forward Ben Smith, whose ice time could increase. "Whoever that is, whoever's playing those roles, will contribute. We're never going to make up for guys like [Brandon] Saad and [Kane], but guys will have to step up and play some big minutes."

The Hurricanes 3-1 win over the Blue Jackets on the road was just the teams second on the road for the second time in nine games away from PNC Arena.

"It was a gutsy effort for us to just kind of grind it out and find a way to get two points on the road," he told NHL.com. "We feel that if we can just play our game and get everyone healthy again, we can string some wins together. Don't count us out yet. There's still some fight in the guys and [Tuesday] night was a good example."

For the Blackhawks to catch the Blues, though, they'll need to replace the contributions of Kane, whose 69 points (29 goals, 40 assists) are tops on the team. He set up Keith's opening goal.

"He brings so many things to the table offensively for us," Keith, who has two goals and five assists in his last eight games told NHL.com. "When you get guys like that out with an injury, you have to look at the positives from it, and the only positives come from other guys getting opportunities to play more minutes and develop their game a little bit more and get confidence going into the playoffs."
