"Weird game, weird game, that's for sure," coach Mike Yeo told NHL.com. "It was weird in the sense that we were getting chances, we're outshooting them by a fairly large margin, but it still didn't feel right."

Yeo is careful to criticize the netminders, who are replacing Niklas Backstrom (core muscle surgery) and Josh Harding (illness) in what has become a downfall of the team, but they continue to hold on.

"I want to be careful on that one. I'm not saying that we can't be any better between the pipes, but at the same time there's some quality chances that we're giving up," Yeo said. "Obviously, we have to do our part to make sure those guys are in the right frame of mind.

After scoring a career-worst six goals in 48 games last season, Backes has 27 goals, four off his career-high of 31, which he reached twice, in 2008-09 and 2010-11, according to NHL.com.

"He's not just a checker; he's a guy that can play in both ends of the rink. He's very good offensively. He's underrated offensively," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "I think people are starting to see that."
