Mao Asada Breaks Yuna Kim World Record, Leads Carolina Kostner, Julia Lipnitskaia, Ashley Wagner At 2014 World Figure Skating Championships [VIDEO]

As the 2014 World Figure Skating Championships continues, Mao Asada is making history by besting Yuna Kim's long-standing world record for the short program.

After finishing a disappointing 6th at the 2014 Sochi Olympics due to her dismal short program, Mao Asada completed her triple axel and the remaining elements to earn a score of 78.66.

This is .16 ahead of the world record set by Yuna Kim at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

"As the last competition of this season, I am happy to skate the best short program," said Mao Asada according to Fox Sports. "My mission here is to perform both programs perfect so already half is done and tomorrow I want to focus on showing everything I have practiced."

While 2014 Sochi silver medalist Yuna Kim is not competing at the World Figure Skating Championships, Mao Asada is in direct competition with Carolina Kostner (currently in 2nd place) and Julia Lipnitskaia (3rd).

When asked about the 2014 Sochi Olympics figure skating results, the now retired Yuna Kim questioned the controversial judging.

“It was absurd but I felt good that it’s over," she said simply. “When I was finished, I could feel that I was not that desperate."

Suspiciously, Adelina Sotnikova is not competing at the 2014 World Figure Skating Championships after winning Olympic gold.

The free skate for the ladies discipline will commence on March 29.
