Despite being caught in a slump, losing seven in a row, all of which were in regulation, Toronto can salvage its season down the final stretch.

"It's the biggest game of the year," coach Randy Carlyle told NHL.com.

His players agreed and understand what needs to be done.

"We just have to play a desperate brand of hockey," forward James van Riemsdyk told NHL.com. "Obviously, we know what's ahead of us here and how big this game is. We're fighting with these guys right there in the standings. So we can win this and kind of kick-start ourselves and go on a little run."

Detroit has dropped its last three, only getting one point out of those games. The Red Wings continue to be playing from behind, but face a team they defeated 11 nights ago.

"My big thing here today is just, as we said earlier, catch-up hockey is losing hockey. You've got to get prepared, you've got to play right and you have to do it for 60 minutes and be patient," coach Mike Babcock said. "When you start chasing the game like we were tonight anything can happen. It's entertaining and all that for the fans but it's not a recipe for success whatsoever."
