Singapore Tourism Ad For Philippine Travelers Withdrawn: ‘The Most Cringe-Worthy Video To Market Singapore With’; ‘Horrid Promo Vid’ Taken Down But Goes Viral

Singapore Tourism Board’s video advert to lure Philippine travelers to the island-state may be described using the hashtag, #epicfail. After the video was taunted, described as the “most cringe-worthy video to market singapore with,” the STB took down the video last month.

YouTube user theaaronloy, however, found a way to let it live online. Uploading it with the title “Singapore Tourism Board’s Horrid Promo vid,” the video has been watched almost 100,000 times and receive 400 dislikes out of its total 70 likes.

“I like how there was a montage of all the beautiful Singaporean things just before the final surprise,” the YouTube user wrote in the video’s description. “Just like the flashbacks you get before you die.”

The super cheesy promo video depicted two couples on a romantic getaway as part of their wedding anniversary. There were overacted exclamations throughout the video, coming from the supposed delight they get from seeing the sights and sounds of the country.

The “real sting in the tail,” as the Sydney Morning Herald describes, comes from the presentation of a jewelry box from her to him over dinner. The content of the box is what makes this whole advert mesmerizing. In it was a pregnancy test kit displaying a positive result.

“I’ve seen some corny ads with bad production value, but this hits a totally new level,” commented YouTube user Fenton Abad.

The Sydney Morning Herald noted that spoofs of the ad has been posted on the Facebook parody site SGAG, complete with mock-up of ads featuring free pregnancy test kits for every visitor to Singapore.

Advertising agency JWT confirmed to Marketing Interactive that neither the agency nor its digital arm was responsible for the video.
