Wyatt Earp Colt .45 Revolver From Gunfight at OK Corral Sold For $225,000 In Spite of Questions About Authenticity

Wyatt Earp Revolver: The Gunfight at OK Corral, it's the stuff of American legend. It is pure Americana of the roughest kind. Wyatt Earp's revolver, a Colt .45, the one he used at the OK Corral shootout in Tombstone, Ariz., was sold at auction for $225,000.  Legendary Arizona lawman Wyatt Earp would be pleased. The items were brought under the gavel by Wyatt Earp's family, but some questioned the authenticity of some of them.

More than 6,400 online bidders showed up at the auction of Wyatt Earp memorabilia in what the press is calling a standing room only draw. Quick draw that is. 400 collectors showed up on Thursday night. J. Levine Auction & Appraisal officials said the auction brought in more than $445,000.

A New Mexico bidder made the winning bid for the Colt .45 revolver by phone.

Wyatt Earp's descendants say Earp carried the Colt revolver when he was sheriff of Tombstone and there is a strong that used it at the shootout at the O.K. Corral. Some collectors questioned the authenticity of some of the items because its serial number had been rubbed of and the gun's barrel, cylinder and grips had been replaced.

The head of the auction house, Josh Levine, said the gun comes with pages of documents that testify to its authenticity, including a notarized, sworn affidavit signed and a letter from Colt that confirmed that the gun was made in the time period that Earp lived.

USS Today reported that John Anderson, a founder of Isagenix International in Chandler, Ariz., outbid his competitors and bought a $125,000 Winchester lever-action shotgun for $50,000. A Colt revolver belonging to Wyatt's brother, Virgil Earp, that was valued at $30,000 sold for $37,500.
