Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 release date, price: Specs of the $295 Tizen powered wearable Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 includes a weight that’s 6 grams lightern that its predecessor. The unit is now available and works well with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Samsung Galaxy S5.

According to PC Pro U.K., the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2’s processor has been upgraded to 1GHz and the display remains the same as before. The Super AMOLED panel measures 1.63 inches across the diagonal and has a resolution of 320 x 320. The colors of the unit are bright and intensely saturated.

The major changes of the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 are with the hardware. The unit’s camera has moved from the strap to the body of the watch, enabling the user to swap the strap of the unit whenever. Available colors of the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 straps include black, brown, and orange while a number of designer options are expected to follow.

Other features of the second version of the Samsung Galaxy Gear include water and dust-resistance capability. There’s also an infrared transmitter to enable the watch to double as a TV remote. A heart-rate monitor is equipped in the unit, placed at the rear of the watch body, which can be used in conjunction with its pedometer facility to keep a closer eye on the user’s fitness.

PC Pro U.K. noted that the reduction on the size also means that the battery is smaller than the previous version. Samsung, however, is claiming a threefold improvement in the battery life of the device thanks in part to the efficiency that the Tizen OS would bring.

The Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 still would be an accompanying wearable for a Samsung smartphone. The device was made available early this month.

Though no statistics have yet been unveiled on the sales of the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2, a report by Trusted Reviews noted that the Samsung Galaxy Gear Fit has sold 250,000 units in just 10 days.

PC Advisor notes that the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 smartwatch is stylish but has limited appeal due to the small list of compatible devices available for it. It’s also deemed bulky and though packed with features, is awkward and generally unnecessary.
