#Bringbackourgirls Campaign Gets Support Of Hollywood’s Biggest Stars; Social Media Efforts Necessary To Pressure Nigerian Government?

#BringBackOurGirls campaign got the support of Hollywood celebrities as social media has proven to be an effective platform to pressure the Nigerian government into taking action to rescue the 200 girls abducted by an extremist group.

The "#BringBackOurGirls" campaign drew the support of Angelina Jolie, comedienne Amy Poehler, Cara Develingne, Leona Lewis, host Rachel Ray, Jessica Biel, Grammy winner Mary J. Blige and singer-songwriter Alicia Keys. Michelle Obama also posted a photo on social media holding a sign with the hashtag.

Anne Hathaway even took a step further when she not only attended a rally in Los Angeles support of the abducted girls but grabbed the megaphone to raise awareness. She was also joined by husband Adam Schulman, NY Daily Newsreported.

According to the publication, Angelina Jolie weighed in on the kidnappings on French TV i-Tele on Wednesday.

"I'm absolutely sickened by it and the thought of them out there right now, terrified and being abused, and sold ... It's infuriating, and it kind of goes beyond understanding that somebody could do this," she said.

The Nigerian government already offered $300,000 bounty for anyone who can provide information that will lead to the location of the girls, but it wouldn't have been possible without the social media efforts.

The #BringBackOurGirls campaign was already shared more than a million times on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The world didn't really take notice of the kidnappings until the speech of Oby Ezekwesili, vice president of the World Bank for Africa, demanding action from the Nigerian government to "bring back our girls," The Guardian reported.

That started social media efforts by Nigerian "Netizens" which started the #BringBackOurGirls campaign.

And as a result of the social media efforts, "the Nigerian government has listened, offered the reward and accepted international offers of help, with David Cameron and Barack Obama both sending in specialist teams to Nigeria to help," the publication added.
