Casey Neistat YouTube Sensation Complains About Bike Lane Ticketing On 2-Year-Old Video; Reached 11,000,000 Views & Still Trending Today [WATCH HERE]

Casey Neistat is a YouTube sensation who was ticketed two years ago for not riding his bike NYC’s infamous and sometimes littered bike lane. He paid $50 for the “violation” and dutifully created a video for what he thought was a seemingly unfair and one-sided penalty for bikers.

Despite the video being two-years old, Neistat is still racking up the hits and it has recently surpassed 11 million views in the video-sharing network. It’s still being shared on social networks today.

The Guardian says that with the video, the YouTube personality has achieved something extraordinary even with the initial response received. When it was released two years ago, it went viral in a span of 24 hours and has gotten him mainstream media attention.

The newspaper also noted that the video is a great piece of gonzo filmmaking, complete with hair-raising stunts all done by the YouTube personality himself. The filmmaker has taken the route of filming very controversial but curiosity-satisfying flicks. He earlier made a film about the failings of the early model iPod, which became a huge underground hit and shamed Apple. He also created a film with his brother showing how ridiculously easy bike theft is.

The backstory behind the film was when NYPD announced late in 2010 that they were going to get tough on cyclists’ infraction of the laws. And they followed up their words with action. There was the controversial ticket blitz in Central Park, where police officers were on duty before dawn to nab bikers training on the park’s closed loop road. After a strong pushback from park users and residents nearby and the bike community, cops backed off the policy.

NYPD’s crackdown on cyclists continues to this day. In a 2013 report by the Daily News last summer, it noted that ticket for bike riders were up 7% in Manhattan and an astonishing 81% in Brooklyn.

The battle between cyclists, drivers and the NYPD continues. It’s no surprise that to this day, Casey’s video is still very much applicable and relevant.
