Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Specs, Update: Android 4.4.2 KitKat For 5.5-inch Phablet Coming Soon; S3 Handset Global Variant Not Getting An Update

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 specs, update: Android 4.4 KitKat for the beloved anti-iPhone is getting the much awaited Android 4.4 KitKat. SamMobile reports that it’s scheduled to arrive either this month or by next. The variant expected to receive the update is Samsung Galaxy Note 2 LTE model GT-N7105 with code N7105XXUFND8. The firmware testing for this model has been completed paving way for a rollout.

Samsung Galaxy S3 users, on the other hand, after waiting for forever for the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update have some bad news. Samsung has confirmed that the handset’s international variant is not getting an Android 4.4 KitKat update.

According to Samsung, the capacity of the phone won’t allow it effectively receive the platform upgrade.

A quick look at the spec sheet of Phone Arena for the unit shows that the Note 2 was released in September 2012 and has a 5.5-inch display, Samsung Exynos quad-core processor, 2GB RAM and 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64GB variants. The handset provides microSD support for internal storage expansion. It also has a 3,100 mAh battery.

SamMobile reports that the new Android 4.4.2 KitKat brings a number of enhancements to the unit. Noticeable changes that users may recognize include full-screen album art, camera shortcut on the lock screen, wireless printing support, NFC tap-to-pay, options to set default messaging and launcher apps as well as better stability. Samsung KNOX is also in the new OS, which allows more secure communications and Samsung Wallet.

The International Business Times reports that not all Samsung Galaxy Note 2 models will get the 4.4.2 KitKat update, citing Android Origin as a source. For U.S. users, it’s expected that Samsung Galaxy Note 2 will receive the OS upgrade but at the time of this writing, none of the major carriers have rolled out an update.

The list of confirmed Samsung Galaxy Note 2 models that will get the Android 4.4 KitKat are: International GT-N7100, China Unicom Gt-N7102, International GT-N7105, China Mobile GT-N7108, Verizon SCH-i605, US Cellular SCH-R950, AT&T SGH-i317, Bell, Rogers, SaskTel and Telus SGH-i317M, T-Mobile SGH-T889, Mobilicity, Videotron and WIND SGH-T889V, Sprint SPH-L900, China Telecom SCH-N719, NTT DoCoMo SGH-N025, KT SHV-E250K, LG U+ SHV-E250L, and SK Telecom SHV.

The Business Times noted that the rollout, like usual Android updates, would be gradual as Samsung will need to send the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update to carriers for certification. Devices may get the upgrade as late as May or longer.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 users can check if the Android 4.4.2 update is now available for their device by going to Go to Settings then "About Phone" and see if there’s a notification for an OS update.
