This event will definitely remind you what Memorial Day is really all about. At the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum on the west side of Manhattan, you can take part in the Memorial Day Ceremony with military personnel from all five branches of the armed forces. This free event at the museum includes a wreath laying, a 21-gun salute and the presentation of a 100-foot-long American flag. The ceremony will definitely touch your patriotic side.

If you happen to be in south Brooklyn, you can head over to Sunset Park around 2:30 p.m. to enjoy the free Memorial Day Concert at the Green-Wood Cemetery. To make it extra special, bring a blanket and pack a little picnic to listen to the ISO Symphonic Band, a wind, brass and percussion ensemble comprised of students. The band's repertory is inspired by the cemetery's residents like Fred Ebb, Louis Moreau Gottschalk and Leonard Bernstein. It's a good excuse to be outside on this beautiful day!

Searching for something artsy to do on this Memorial Day? Then look no further than Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit's Spring Show. This outdoor free event, which takes place in the Washing Square every Memorial and Labor day, showcases fine artists and artisans from all over NYC and the world. There's everything from oil paintings to metal works, ceramics to jewelry. If you have the time, you can linger to see the presentation of prizes to the best artists of Memorial Day 2014!

But if you are lucky enough to find yourself in NYC this Memorial Day, you should take some time to walk through the Central Park or even just down Fifth Avenue. New York is full of surprises and you never know what will be happening around a street corner!
