Utah High School Under Fire For 'Photoshopping' Yearbook Pictures To Make Students Look More Conservative; Dressing Appropriately Leads To Good Future Says School

Wasatch High School in Heber City, Utah is under fire for altering the photos of its graduating students in order for them to look more "conservative". While some of the photos were merely airbrushed to remove pimple marks, some of the girls' yearbook photos were edited to cover exposed skin.

Common changes which were noticed in the photos included higher necklines, the addition of sleeves, and even thickening of tank top straps. Students have complained for some of the girls got away with their outfits without the "digital make over".

"I feel like they put names in a hat and pick and choose who. There were plenty of girls that were wearing thicker tank tops and half of them got edited and half of them didn't," said sophomore Rachel Russel.

"They didn't give you an option to fix it, so you look funny in your yearbook picture," said Shelby Baum, a sophomore whose neckline was raised, to Fox 13.

School superintendent Terry Shoemaker explained why the school decided to rely on Photoshop for some of the students' photos. Shoemaker made a connection between dressing appropriately and preparing for the future.

"We only apologize in the sense that we want to be more consistent with what we're trying to do in that sense we can help kids better prepare for their future by knowing how to dress appropriately for things," he said.

Prior to having the photos, the students were also allegedly informed that their photos might be edited.

Do you think it was appropriate for the school to alter its students' yearbook photos?
