Casey Kasem In Critical Condition; Radio Icon In His Daughter’s Care After Legal Battle

Casey Kasem was reportedly in critical condition with an infected bedsore at a Washington state hospital yesterday. Kasem's family is preparing to say goodbye to the top 40 radio legend while Kasem's daughter and wife headed to court to clear up a legal dispute over his care.

As the battle surrounding Casey Kasem's medical care brought his relatives back into the courtroom on Friday, Kasem's health is declining, and his family is preparing to say goodbye.

Danny Deraney, a spokesman for Kerri Kasem, Casey's daughter, said Kasem "won't be with us much longer."

according to a statement that CNN received from from St. Anthony Hospital on Thursday the former "American Top 40" host is said to be in critical condition.

St. Anthony Hospital spokesman Scott Thompson said "Mr. Kasem is alert and appears comfortable at this time. Any further updates on Mr. Kasem's condition will be at the discretion and approval of his children."

Casey's son, Mike Kasem, traveled from Singapore. Kasem's brother flew in from Detroit. Kasem suffers from Lewy body dementia, which has no cure.

Kasem's Lewy body dementia was misdiagnosed as Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease. Lewy body dementia afflicts 1.3 million Americans. It is a progressive brain disorder in which Lewy bodies, which are abnormal deposits of a protein called alpha-synuclein, build up in areas of the brain that regulate behavior, cognition, and movement.

Michael Koehler, President of the Lewy Body Dementia Association, told NewsWise "It's not surprising Casey Kasem was misdiagnosed. LBD is the most misdiagnosed form of dementia, and it takes on average over 18 months and three doctor visits to receive a correct diagnosis of LBD."

On Friday, a Washington state judge said Casey Kasem's daughter Kerri is in charge of the medical care for the 82-year-old radio personality, not her stepmother. Kasem's children from his first marriage hope the family will look past the legal dispute in Kasem's last moments.

In a statement Kerri Kasem said "If he opens his eyes, I want my dad just once to see everyone standing around him, putting our differences aside and let him know how much he is loved by everyone, including Jean and Liberty."

During the hearing Friday, the court also found Casey Kasem's wife, Jean Kasem, in contempt.

Casey Kasem is best known as the host of "American Top 40." He also hosted "Casey's Top 40" from 1989 to 1998 and was the voice of Shaggy on "Scooby Doo." DJ Casey Kasem, 82, is reportedly worth $80 million.
