Miss Nevada Nia Sanchez Takes the Crown as 63rd Miss USA; Taekwando Master Teaches Women and Children To Defend Themselves Against `Stranger Danger'

Miss Nevada USA Nia Sanchez was crowned Miss USA 2014 during the 63rd annual Miss USA competition yesterday, June 8. This year's Miss USA pageant was after a three-hour event that was  telecast from the Baton Rouge Civic Center in Louisiana. Miss USA's First runner-up was Miss North Dakota Audra Mari.

Miss USA 2013, Erin Brady, who was Miss Connecticut and came out of South Glastonbury, presented her crown her sash and a bouquet to Miss Nevada. Nia Sanchez wore a red fishtail gown.

Nia Sanchez is 24 years old. She comes from Las Vegas. Miss Nevada beat out 50 other contestants from all the states and the District of Columbia to nab the title of 63rd Miss USA.

Miss USA Nia Sanchez is a fourth-degree black belt in taekwondo, a Korean martial art. As Miss USA, Sanchez wants to bring awareness to campus rape. Sanchez says that women should be able to defend themselves. They might need defense arts to battle the growing problem of campus rape.

Sanchez volunteers at shelters and teachers self-defense to women and children. She warns of "stranger danger" and says "I relate to them on a personal level because I've been there myself."

During question and answer period with celebrity judges, Sanchez told Rumer Willis "I believe that some colleges may potentially be afraid of having a bad reputation and that would be a reason it could be swept under the rug, because they don't want that to come out into the public," she said. "But I think more awareness is very important so women can learn how to protect themselves. Myself, as a fourth-degree black belt, I learned from a young age that you need to be confident and be able to defend yourself. And I think that's something that we should start to really implement for a lot of women."
