Apple stock split price, news: The $94 per share of an Apple stock is a welcome report by many investors, old and new alike. One writer noted that the Apple stock could well be its hottest product at the moment.

CNN Money reports that the tech company’s seven-for-one stock split officially went into effect Monday, making shares of the tech giant more accessible for the little guy. Thanks to the split, the stock is less than a $100 compared to Friday’s closing of $645.57.

Trading of the stock was slightly heavier Monday and many said they intend to buy shares of Apple’s stock this week.

Yahoo Finance notes that the Cupertino tech giant now has more than 6 billion shares of stock outstanding, up from 860 million shares before the split.

Some question why Apple is splitting stock now. According to the San Jose Mercury News, Apple appeared to be following the lead of Google, allowing its price to fluctuate without any attempts to manipulate it through a split.

The company’s leadership, however, the newspaper noted had a change of heart. Apple CEO Tim Cook, when announcing the split, said that the move would make Apple’s shares “more accessible to a larger number of investors.”

The Silicon Valley newspaper said that two years ago, Apple didn’t have much to worry about making its shares more attractive. The company was experiencing skyrocketing sales and profits, the company’s stock had been climbing steadily for three years and were up by a massive 5,400 percent since 2003.

But Apple is now in a different place. Sales and earnings of the iPhone and iPad-maker is slowing to a crawl and its stock price plunged last summer. Though Apple’s stock price has since rebounded, the company has yet to return to the record highs set in 2012.

It’s unclear if the stock split will help boost Apple’s stock. But it can help boost the price by getting the tech giant into the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
