James Cameron Announces Writers For Avatar 2: Three Sequels Planned In Total [PHOTO]

If you remember Avatar, which you do, you probably remember cringing at the sheer laziness that was "unobtainium," hopefully that is a thing of the past. James Cameron has been working on the scripts for the Avatar sequels for four years with little news, but yesterday James Cameron announced who will be helping him on the scripts for Avatar 2, Avatar 3, and, yes, Avatar 4.

The current plan is to film Avatar 2 and 3 at the same time and then release them a year apart. Avatar 4 is reported to be a prequel focusing on the settlement of Pandora.

Yesterday James Cameron announced that the creator of "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" Josh Friedman will be helping with the screenplay for Avatar 2, which turned out not to be true. Today Fox announced/ clarified that Cameron has actually enlisted the help of four screenwriters to collaborate with him on the screenplays for Avatar 2 and 3, and 4.

Avatar producer Jon Landau has now specified exactly which screenwriters will be working on which scripts in an interview with the New York Times. Avatar 2 will be written by Rise of the Planet of the Apes duo Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. The script for Avatar 3 will be scribed by Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles writer Josh Friedman, who, as previously mentioned, is also working on the rewrite for 2.  Finally, Avatar 4 will be written by Shane Salerno, who co-wrote the screenplay for the 2012 Oliver Stone movie Savages.

"Building upon the world we created with Avatar has been a rare and incredibly rewarding experience.  In writing the new films, I've come to realize that Avatar's world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated, and it became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on screen. And to help me continue to expand this universe, I'm pleased to bring aboard Amanda, Rick, Shane and Josh - all writers I've long admired - to join me in completing the films screenplays."

James Cameron, Rick Jaffa, Josh Friedman, Shane Salerno, and Amanda Silver have sat down in a room for five months, eight hours a day, figuring out the exact stories for the sequels. Only recently has Cameron assigned each writer a film.

The first of the sequels is poised to hit theaters in December of 2016.
