20th FIFA World Cup: Spain 0-2 Chile, the champions are out

Hard to believe but yes, the world champions are out. The champs marched off the pitch in the Maracana Stadium last night, heads bowed, all resistance spent.  After couple of plays they have no points and a goal difference that reads 1-7. Their performance for this World Cup was counted as one of the worst defense in the FIFA history, poorer even than Italy in South Africa four years ago.

The face off against Chile not only spelled the end of the world's champion team but also predicted to demise the entire footballing philosophy. On Wednesday at the Maracana, it felt like a great period of an era. Spain's complex passing style, dubbed "tika-taka" and other new techniques swept all before it for the best part of six years. The sight of Andres Iniesta and Xabi Alonso being hassled out of their stride by Jorge Sampaoli's industrious Chile made it all so hopeless for the Spaniards.

The next games to witness are the battle against Columbia and Côte d'lvoire at 13:00 to be followed by the play of Uruguay and England at 16:00 and Japan versus Greece at 19:00.
