20TH FIFA World Cup: US vs Portugal on Sunday, players suffer from injuries

“Victorious team players” – that’s what social media talks about. The US team opened the World Cup with honour and pride after winning over nemesis Ghana with the score of 2-1. “Woke up today, this morning, and you look at your Instagram and Twitter and you see the videos that people posted,” Bedoya explained about Brook’s goal that made the fans celebrating back home. “It’s really cool, and I’m sure everybody feeds off this energy,” resource from Gazette.com The team crossed their fingers and hope to be the first American batch to win consecutive World Cup games since at the very first tournament in 1930. But several of their players were suffering from different injuries. Altidore was seriously hurt after straining his left hamstring and was taken off on a stretcher during the last game. “We’ve got to see how he now reacts the next couple days,” US coach Jurgen Klinsmann declared. “We’re full of hope that he comes back still this in this tournament.” Dempsey had his nose broken from defender John Boye when Boye’s shin hit his face. Hence, Klinsmann still expects him on Sunday against Portugal. Besler felt soreness in his right leg and Bedoya declared he had hip pointer and got his hamstring cramped. So before the next game on Sunday, the team needs to heal a little. Portugal, on the other hand, also has injury issues that might change their game plan. Fabio Coentrao was taken off on a stretcher and was out on the tournament as Hugo Almeida limped off. Also Pepe was out of the game last Monday against Germany with the score of 4-0 in favour of the Germans. In the last ranking, if the US ties 4th with Portugal and Germany will win over Ghana, Americans would go to their 3rd match in position to advance. If ever the Americans and Germans win, the US clinches with a game to spare. The history continues for the Team US with this wonderful start off season for them. The US won its World Cup opener for only the third time in 10 times, following a 1930 victory against Belgium with a score of 3-0 that made them advance to the semi-finals. Also a take home bacon against Portugal with 3-2 score back in 2002 which advanced them to the quarter-finals.
