France has been awfully quiet during Brazil World Cup 2014, probably because the team has been playing as well as expected. With all the European soccer powerhouses falling away during the group play part of the tournament, France is one of the few European survivors, the other being Belgium, Netherlands and, of course, Germany. According to the New York Times, with two wins and six points, France has 99% of advancing into round of 16, which is to say, something miraculously unfortunate has to happen for France to fall away.

As for the other teams, things are a little more complicated. According to the probability chart that New York Times has put together, Ecuador has 31% chance of advancing while the next-up Switzerland 68%.

The reason why Ecuador has a smaller chance of advancing is precisely because of today's game. While it only needs to match Switzerland's results to advance, Ecuadorian team is facing France, not Honduras. Switzerland will have a much easier time scoring against Honduras to clinch the passage to the round of 16, despite its devastating loss to France.

Ecuador center half Frickson Erazo told AP, ''The way to read it is that we're going to have a lot of work".
