What is happening to Serena Williams? To say that she has not been feeling well at Wimbledon 2014 is an understatement - something serious is plaguing the Grand Slam champion. She may even be going blind.

Two hours later her breakdown and tearful exit, Serena Williams released a statement that read:

"I am heartbroken I'm not able to continue in the tournament. I thought I could rally this morning, because I really wanted to compete, but this bug just got the best of me."

"Strangest 15 minutes I've seen on a tennis court, without a doubt," two-time U.S. Open champion Tracy Austin said on BBC TV.

After failing to serve and make contact with the ball, the tennis star requested a medical break during which she consulted her doctor for good ten minutes.

Simon Cambers of the Guardian tweeted, "Doctor saying to Serena Williams: 'If you can't see the ball, you shouldn't play' ".

Wimbledon also tweeted, "The word from the referee's office is that Serena Williams is suffering from a viral illness".

Could it be that Serena Williams is going blind? The media is calling this exit "bizarre", "strange" and "sad". But most of all, this sudden and dramatic exit is still not properly explained. What could be plaguing the single-most successful American tennis player?

The world number 1 lost in the third round of Wimbledon women's singles match to French Alize Cornet. Her sister, Venus Williams also fell to Petra Kvitova during the third round match.
