World’s Richest Countries 2014: Macau Now 4th World’s Richest Territory Overtaking Switzerland; Casino Capital Of China Has USD 90,00 Plus GDP Per Capita

World’s richest countries 2014: Macau, the gambling center of China and a former Portuguese colony have overtaken Switzerland as the world’s fourth-richest territory. According to The Guardian a swelling number of tourists and gamblers from Mainland China has helped drive the GDP per capita of Macau by up to 18% in 2013 to £53,227 or roughly $91,334.87.

Macau overtook Switzerland where the GDP per capita rose by 2% in 2013 to £46,946. The Guardian also reports that Luxembourg, Norway and Qatar retained the top three slots, while the United Kingdom has remained unchanged from its 2012 GDP. The United States is ranked 10th amongst the world’s richest countries.

Macau is the only territory in China where gambling is legal. The population of the Special Administrative Region is just 566,400 in 2013 but its totaled GDP was at £30.16bn thanks to huge gaming revenues that dwarf those of Las Vegas, the Guardian reports.

The crackdown on corruption amongst China’s government officials by president Xi Jinping has seemingly led gambling tycoons in Macau to invest lavishly in resort, high-end shopping malls, and elaborate stage shows with the goal of diversifying into more family-friendly tourist destinations.

The Chinese territory is home to more than 30 casinos, including the world’s largest, the Venetian Macau, which receives a total of 120,000 visitors a day over the 2013 Christmas period.

The bustling Asian region has been benefiting from the swelling middle classes in China as the wealth and influence of the world’s second largest economy continues to rise. Macau had 17 million tourists from China alone in 2013, an exponential figure compared to just 800,000 in 1999. The increase shows the enormous consumer power coming from the mainland.

Reports note that almost half of those visitors only stay for less than 24 hours and places an average bet of £60.
