Those who are brand new to 'Sailor Moon Crystal', it "retells the story of Sailor Moon as she searches for her fellow Sailor Guardians and the Legendary Silver Crystal to stop the dark forces of Queen Beryl," according to Hulu. It is based on Naoko Takeuchi's legendary manga series.

Why was Sailor Moon so popular in the U.S.? The series basically kickstarted the female anime fandom in the states, spurring a craze female heroines that obsessed about boys and fighting the evil ones. The characters were stereotypical, emotional and clumsy, but they didn't exist in shows that were airing in the states at that time.

According to the previous KPopStarz article, this time around, the 'Sailor Moon' gay characters will be uncensored from the series.

The same-sex romance of Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune, initially edited out of the first American version, will be explored in detail.

In the 1990s, the series portrayed the two female lovers as cousins. How boring. The mid-90s America was not ready for homosexuality on screen, even in animated, fantasized context. Maybe exactly because of that. 'Sailor Moon' was altered in content and character roles to skirt around any controversial topics.

But now Hulu and VIZ Media's Neon Alley promise to stay faithful to the original, "absolutely uncut", with a Japanese voice cast supplemented by English subtitles. Having control over the the rights and the online streaming service, this remastered and uncut (no pun intended) version of 'Sailor Moon' is expected to be excellent.

Tune into watch 'Sailor Moon Crystal every first and third Saturday of the month on Hulu. Episode 2 will air on July 19!
