Crumbs Bakery NYC News: Demise Of World’s Largest Cupcake Empire Probably Caused By ‘Bite Sized Sweet Treats’ Providers

Crumbs Bakery NYC news: It’s a headline that shocked cupcake lovers all over the world, most especially New Yorkers when the famous bakery Crumbs closed its doors Monday. Partly to blame according to the NY Post, is the rise of “bite sized sweet treats” that’s now all over the city.

Crumbs Crumble
The 11-year-old bakeshop told its workers Monday that it would not reopen after close of business, the Wall Street Journal reports.

"Regrettably Crumbs has been forced to cease operations and is immediately attending to the dislocation of its devoted employees while it evaluates its limited remaining options," Crumbs said in a statement.

All its 48 stores nationwide have been shuttered because of continually falling sales and poor stock performance.

Big Cupcakes VS. Small Cupcakes, Treats & More
According to the Daily News, the takeaway from Crumbs demise is that bigger isn’t always better.

“People are more health conscious (and they don’t want to) eat one big gluttonous cupcake,” according to Evan Feldman, who owns the Doughnuttery in Chelsea Market.

Feldman says that the new trend is micro-sized treats, as evidenced by Doughnuttery, Treat House, and Baked by Melissa.

The said outlets have been focused in selling this bite-sized goodies that satisifes the craving but doesn’t bring too much guilt for the calorie-conscious.

Treat House delivers gourmet marshmallow and Rice Krispies treats. It serves its mini melted-butter-and-marshmallow squares in a variety of flavors, like bubble gum and carame sea salt.

Baked by Melissa is a mini cupcake store, where the serving is about the size of a quarter and comes in a variety of seasonally changing flavors like s’mores and peanut butter and jelly.

And Feldman’s Doughnuttery sells mini doughnuts that are fried and sugarcoated on an assembly line right in front of customers.
