MacBook Pro Retina vs. MacBook Air 2014: ‘Pro’ Keeps Features; Look Out For Smaller ‘Airs’ On The Way

MacBook Pro Retina vs. MacBook Air 2014: If you are in the market for a new MacBook laptop, you have the option to choose between the MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air. But if you are after choosing from the three sizes available in the ‘Air’ series, better make a quick decision because rumor has it that Apple is going for a one-size ‘Air.’

Aside from the usual updates and tweaks in its processors and features, the MacBook Pro lineup will remain the same. But this is not the same for ‘Air.’

It is said that a 12-inch MacBook Air model is on its way, claiming to be the lightest ‘Air’ model ever. It will be replacing all the current models in the ‘Air’ series. Aiming for portability and of course quality, the upcoming lightweight is said to have a Retina display with a 2304x1440 resolution that is even better than HD.

According to 9to5 Mac, the new 12-inch Air will include power-sipping Intel 'Broadwell' chips. This means that the Air will become fanless. However, 9to5 Mac cautioned that the quality of the entire laptop, particularly the hardware, might be affected.

The upcoming flagship Apple laptop is expected to come out later this year.

Meanwhile, an old ‘Pro’ predecessor model might also be faced out. Because of its outdated disk drive, lack of Retina display, and not to mention slow RAM, the 13-inch MacBook Pro might soon be pulled out of the market.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro is currently one of the cheapest models in the Apple roster. Some of its parts can be recycled into other useful gadgets. You also tweak the Pro a bit, remove the optical drive, and manually install an OWC Data Doubler. You can then use the optical disk drive as your own portable, external drive.

In 2015 we can also expect that the entire MacBook lineup’s processor will be upgraded from Haswell-based Intel silicon to the Broadwell chipsets (same as the 12-inch MacBook Air). But hopefully, by that time, all the bugs affecting the quality of the Apple hardware will be fixed.
