Gillian Anderson, `X-Files’ Star, Says Career Stalled in England; Anderson Stars In `Streetcar Named Desire’ in London

Gillian Anderson, who was almost a household name when she played Agent Dana Scully on Fox's "The X-Files," says her career suffered after she moved to England.

The 45-year-old actress says that since she moved to London in 2002 she has gotten few film role offers. Gillian says she is glad she decided to stay in the U.K to raise her sons, Oscar, seven, and Felix, five, with ex-boyfriend Mark Griffiths. Anderson also has a 20-year-old daughter Piper from her first marriage to Clyde Klotz.

Gillian Anderson told the UK's The Telegraph newspaper: "I am so devoted to this city and my little ones are British. I can't imagine being anywhere else so I work with that."

But the consummate actress insists she is satisfied with her career. She says she will go after more film roles as her sons get older.

The X-Files star Gillian Anderson is currently playing Blanche Dubois, the aging and alcoholic southern belle, in the famous play by Tennessee Williams, "A Streetcar Named Desire" at the Young Vic Theater. The revival will be directed by Benedict Andrews.

She told The Telegraph ''With 'The Fall' and 'Streetcar' I feel that if I died in September then I could look down from up there feeling I had accomplished what I wanted to accomplish. 'But on the other hand, I don't feel like I have even begun. That is mostly because I just love film. I love the medium and there are so many directors I haven't worked with and experiences that I have not had.''

Gillian is co-writing a sci-fi novel with Jeff Rovin. Anderson she hopes to turn the novel into a film and play the lead.

She said: ''I have been putting my responsibilities as a mother first and as my children get older at some point I can pursue it in a different way than I have been, probably when nobody wants to hire me because... I will be 50. So then nobody will want to make my novel unless the lead is actually 33 and they'll hire a 12-year-old to play her.''

"The X-Files" was a television show that ran on Fox from 1993 to 2002 following in the tradition of mystery detective shows like "The Night Stalker" that became a major cult hit and geek obsession when it ran on Fox from 1993 to 2002. Gillian Anderson, played FBI Special Agent Dana Scully and David Duchovny played Fox "Spooky" Mulder, FBI agents who investigated unexplained phenomenon and odd monster people while looking for Duchovny's long-lost sister who disappeared in a UFO when he was a kid. Two movies were made of series, one filled in the gaps over the summer break, the other made when the series ended.
