Jodie Foster Adds Best Director Emmy Nomination to Her Wall of Awards; Foster Talks About `Orange Is The New Black’ Gig

Jodie Foster will be adding a Directing Emmy to her already impressive stack of statues. Foster, a former Coppertone ad kid, received a Best Director Emmy nomination for her work on the Netflix original series Orange Is The New Black.

"I'm not one for lounging around and having long soliloquies about a character" said Foster. "TV is the biggest team effort and the pace happens so fast."

The former child star, who gathered a lot of controversy and Academy Award attention when she played a 12-year-old hooker in Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver" directed the third episode of the Orange Is The New Black's first season.

The episode was called "Lesbian Request Denied" and it delved into the backstory of Laverne Cox's character Sophia Burset.

"It's all about the journey of Laverne's character and it's the beginning of the audience really understanding what Orange Is The New Black is really about. It's about identity and struggle," Foster

Jodie Foster, who also directed films such as the 2011 movie 'The Beaver" with Mel Gibson said "As a director, dramedy is what I do. It's not who I am as an actor. The genre requires a very specific skill in terms of recognizing what is quirky and perverse, and to be moved by it. The female prisoners on Orange Is The New Black have a very spiritual journey that's so complex. They're all soul-searching and they change through each other."

Foster won Best Actress Oscar for her work in the 1988 film "The Accused" and the 1991 movie "The Silence of the Lambs." Besides the 2011 film "The Beaver" she also directed 1995's "Home for the Holidays."

Foster says "I am an actor's director, the first of whom signed with Orange. A lot of the actresses on the show are fresh out of Juilliard."

Jodie Foster's Orange is the New Black work on "Lesbian Request Denied" details how the sex change effected Burset's wife and child. Cox made history this week by becoming the first transgender Emmy nominee.

Foster was nominated for an Emmy for the 1999 Showtime film "The Baby Dance."

In OITNB's second season, Foster directed the episode "Thirsty Bird." Jodie also directed an episode of the popular Netflix series, House of Cards.

The third season of Orange is the New Black premieres next June.
