'Battleborn' Game Announced By Gearbox: Creators of 'Borderlands' Franchise Creating Fantasy Mash-Up Game, Watch Reveal Trailer Here [VIDEO]

Gearbox has announced "Battleborn," a new "AAA hero-shooter experience" coming to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Developed by the teams who made "Borderlands 2, Battleborn "is set in the distant future of an imaginative science-fantasy universe" and is described as an "ambitious fusion of genres," featuring highly-stylized visuals and first-person shooting, complete with co-op combat, competitive multiplayer, and a variety of different heroes.

Gearbox President Randy Pitchford had this to say:

If Borderlands 2 is a shooter-looter, Battleborn is a hero-shooter. As a genre-fused, hobby-grade, co-operative and competitive FPS exploding with eye-popping style and an imaginative universe, Battleborn is the most ambitious video game that Gearbox has ever created.

2K President Christoph Hartmann added:

Battleborn represents the combined might of the development and publishing teams behind the success of Borderlands 2, which to date has sold-in more than 9-million units worldwide and has become 2K's highest-selling game of all time. The size, scope, and ambition of Battleborn are unlike any other title in 2K's history, and the result is a defining next-gen co-operative experience.

A press release from Take-Two - parent of publisher 2K - states Battleborn is set to be released before March 31, 2016 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Windows PC. However, the game's Facebook page gives a release date of 2015.

According to GameInformer, Battleborn features both a high stakes story and 5v5 competitive multiplayer mode similar to MOBAs such as League of Legends and Dota 2. Players take the roles of fantastical heroes, none of which look or even play the same way. The reveal trailer shows an elven archer, an android gentleman, and a sorcerer among other heroes.

In the 5v5 multiplayer mode, players compete against one another as robot minions take part in an "ongoing tug-of-war." All players start at level one at the beginning of each game and increase up to level 20 by the end, collecting custom abilities along the way.

"Borderlands 2" has sold more than 9 million copies to date. Gearbox's next take on genre mashing is sure to impress. Take a lookt at the official reveal trailer below. Or follow this link for Gameinformer's exclusive coverage.
