The viewers finally learn Virginia Johnson’s answer to Ethan Haas’ proposal (spoiler alert!), which was no, but that’s wasn’t the only bomb that episode 1 dropped. Barton Scully tried to hang himself (only after he went through terrifying-to-watch electroconvulsive therapy and got rejected by Margaret in bed), Bill Masters let his tongue loose on his extramarital affairs to his mother, Virginia breaks up with Ethan over the phone (always a bad way to let somebody down) and Bill and Virginia starts to conduct their affairs at an Illinois hotel as Dr. and Mrs. Holden.

In short, the season premiere of ‘Masters of Sex’ was a big pill to swallow. But oddly enough, it wasn’t quite of a thrilling episode that one would have expected. The pacing of episode 1 was way off, with many extended flashbacks that halted the real-time plot development. Also, was anyone else bothered by the hazy rose-colored filter used in those moments?

On a tangent, it was weird to see Bill Masters smile that much in one episode. It was as creepy as watching the electroconvulsive therapy scene.

But it was nice to see Libby gaining some leg under her (literally) as she lobbied to get her cheating husband a job at Memorial hospital. That poor baby though, don’t know if it’ll ever get the love it deserves from Bill.

As for Virginia, she is now riding the line between “complicated” and “unlikable”. Having rejected Ethan, the saint in ‘Masters of Sex’, she has slid down that likability meter. Bill was also going back on the “complicated” and “unlikable” throughout season 1, but he officially stepped over to the territory of “unlikable”. With both of them straddling the two, the writers may soon need to put in some redeeming qualities at least in one of them to make the viewer emotionally invested.
