Right after its release, "Ditto" immediately topped local and international music charts, ranking No. 1 in Korea's major music sites such as MelOn, Genie, Bugs and it also entered Flo. The song also topped the iTunes Top Songs chart in seven countries/regions around the world, including the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Aside from the visuals and idol skills of the quintet, the reason it's gaining attention from music listeners is due to the track's concept.

In particular, "Ditto" is a reinterpretation of the Baltimore club dance music genre in the United States. Compared to what NewJeans showed from their hit debut songs, "Attention" and "Hype Boy," released last summer, "Ditto" is more like a dance to shake off something you had to do than holding onto sadness and crying.

It also incorporated the dim and romantic meeting between soft Y2K (millennial popular from the late 1900s to the early 2000s) and the Z generation emotions worked in the winter following summer.

NewJeans Reveals 2 Music Videos For 'Ditto' –  Interpretation

Aside from the song itself, what attracted the attention of fanns the most is the unique music videos released by NewJeans.

Instead of just one, the team unveiled two-part MVs (Side A and Side B), making viewers get more immersed in the narrative and directing elements.

On December 20, Newsis revealed the meaning and interpretation of the MVs, which were created in collaboration with CEO Min Hee Jin, a former creative director with Director Shin Woo Suk.

According to the article, the music videos' atmosphere was adapted from Japanese Director Iwai Shunji's classic films, including "Love Letter" (1995), "Hana and Alice" (2004)m and "All About Lily Chou-Chou" (2001).

On top of that, some of the scenes also remind viewers of the classic Korean academy horror, "Girls' High School Story."

Delving deeper into the MV's symbolisms, a deer that appeared on both side A and side B "that looks at Heesoo with a sad emotion" means fundamental nostalgia or "self-portrait."

Ban Heesoo, a character played by rising actress Park Ji Hoo represents Bunnies, the fandom of NewJeans. There are speculations that "Ban Heesoo" is actually a wordplay of the fandom's name.

In the MV, Heesoo always captures the image and actions of the five members using a camcorder. The mysterious character is a metaphor that fandom and stars can go beyond simply cheering for each other and sometimes suffer loss, "Walk in this maze."

A friend of the opposite sex, the male lead, was then played by actor Choi Hyun Wook from the drama "Weak Hero Class 1." He appears to be the romantic interest of Ban Heesoo, depicting an obstacle to a fan sentiment.

Meanwhile, Minji calling Heesoo in the music video couldn't be ignored as well, it simply creates a connection between a star and a fan.

The media outlet added:

"However, as the music video proves, the two are not interdependent. It is an independent relationship that recognizes that we can lose each other. That's why we care more about each other and value each other. ('Ra-ta-ta-ta That's why we can walk through the maze of our lives with a ringing heart')."
