K-Pop May Need A New Strategy After Numerous Idol Member Withdrawals

It seems that with more and more idol group members leaving their groups, K-Pop may need a different strategy in regards to this issue.

Even up until Hankyung's withdrawal from Super Junior, the industry did see how severe the problems were in Korean-Chinese idol groups.

However, with the recent EXO Kris and Luhan issue, SM Entertainment may need to work on creating an updated guideline for their global singers.

SM has spent a lot of time and effort in adding Chinese members to their idol groups in order to target the Chinese industry. Having a foreigner in a group was one of Lee Soo Man's 'Culture Technology (CT)' guidelines.

Even before we think about the 7 years of time and effort they put on Luhan and Kris, it seems to be harder to grasp morally as to their decision to leave the group. Other media outlets in China and around the world have been analyzing this situation in different ways as well. Having this type of issue being analyzed in so many different ways just goes to show how hard it must be for different countries with cultural differences to work together as well.

The hallyu of K-Pop in China has been changing greatly recently as well. As of last year, it has been harder to hold concerts in China besides a few K-Pop stars. China has been seeing K-Pop's limitations and have suggested that K-Pop find a new strategy soon.

In China, the main source to watch K-Pop or K-drama is through K-Pop video sites. There are not ways to watch it through their mainstream channels. This shows that aside from the die-hard fans, they aren't attracting any other audiences.

If this continues, the number of idol groups that will be able to perform in China will decrease. K-Pop will need to find a new strategy before this actually happens.

One way would be through K-drama OST's. Singer Lyn was not known in China until her OST from the popular drama, "My Love From The Stars" was released.

With just once song she was able to promote in China and receive much popularity.

Singer Lee Seung Chul also recently held a concert in Beijing and was greeted by 4,000 fans and over 30 media outlets.

Lee Seung Chul's agency was surprised at the outcome and felt that because Lee Seung Chul had appeared on "Superstar K 6" and sang many OST's for popular dramas, he was still popular in China.

Although YG and SM hold their concerts over in China, holding it every year with a similar concept will later make it hard for their artists to come back to China for solo concerts.

Last year, YB Band held a concert in China and received an explosive amount of popularity. It might not be a bad idea for K-Pop to release different genres as well.

Aside from China, K-Pop should also work on creating a strategy for neighboring countries such as Indonesia, Thailand and others as well to spread the K-Pop Hallyu.
