K-Pop Crossover: Diplo, CL Collaboration Single Premieres Ahead Of 2NE1 Rapper's Solo Debut

In anticipation of her upcoming solo English debut, 2NE1's Lee "CL" Chaerin has a new collaboration single with Diplo, Riff Raff and OG Maco.

On Thursday, "Doctor Pepper" was uploaded to Sound Cloud under Diplo's record label, Mad Decent. Like CL's collaboration with Diplo last year for "Dirty Vibe," CL raps and performs in English as opposed to her work with the K-pop girl group 2NE1.

"Diplo canceled a session on me, and I was so mad at him," said CL to The Fader. "I was drinking a can of Dr. Pepper and wrote the song so I could go home as soon as possible, Diplo ended up loving it!"

Reportedly, Diplo is actively involved in CL's first full-length album as well as her solo debut.

"I've been active in CL's first full-length album, mostly trying to find a right balance between glossy K-pop attitude and keeping CL positioned where she belongs-as the baddest coolest female out right now," said Diplo

"'Dr. Pepper' is something that might not register that well with actual K-pop, seeing as it's a straight Atlanta-style rap record, but the net around K-pop is so wide that it can be anything with confidence and style. That's what CL brings to it."

Recently, CL opened her own official Facebook artist page, and the pressure is on for the Korean pop star to deliver in the US. According to a recent interview with YG Entertainment CEO Yang Hyun Suk, how she fares in the English market will affect 2NE1's activities in the States as well.

"As soon as CL's solo promotion in America ends, 2NE1 will release a new album," said Yang according to Koreaboo. "CL's advanced success in America will impact 2NE1's comeback direction. If CL's goes big in America, there is a higher possibility that 2NE1 will stand in American stage as well."
