MERS Panic Continues To Take Toll On South Korean Entertainment Industry

The on-going MERS scare in South Korea continues to affect the Korean entertainment industry.

Following the cancellation of several concerts in Seoul, the fear of spreading MERS led to further changes in the Korean entertainment. Events by Korean celebrities both in Korea and internationally were affected.

MBC's weekly music show Show Music Core announced that its weekly audience would only accept fans who arrive wearing face masks, while Running Man cast member Kim Jong Kook spoke about theMERS situation at an event in China.

On June 6, Korean outlets reported that MBC's weekly show Show Music Core was only going to allow in audience members who came with face masks, a precaution that many Koreans have begun to wear.

Anybody who did not wear a mask was not allowed in to the recording.

The most recent episode of Show Music Core featured performances by many idol groups, includingEXO, SHINee, and KARA, while three K-pop idols- SHINee's Minho, Red Velvet's Yeri, and VIXX's N- are the hosts of the weekly show.

On June 6, South Korean star Kim Jong Kook performed at the Hong Kong Youth Music Festival 2015, and was asked about why he appeared without a mask.

"Many of my fans here come out to get a glimpse of me. If I wear the mask, these people won't be able to get a clear sight of me. I don't like it," said Kim, according to the K-Pop Herald. "I heard that people with a healthy immune system don't need to worry too much about MERS infection, and I'm being extra careful on the matter."

The Wall Street Journal reports that MERS has led to at least five deaths in South Korea, and raised critiscsm of the government's handling of the outbreak.
