The Emergence Of Music Festivals In South Korea

With the emergence of different music festivals opening up in South Korea, the country has come a long way since its first rock festival held in 1999 in Incheon. Called the Tripot Rock Festival, this became the root of constant development to other festivals.

However, through the years, a majority of music festivals were used as a marketing and promotional tools rather than music competitions.

Thus, raising question to rather these music festivals were all about an increase in quantity without quality.

While there are other genres celebrating with festivals yearly, these music festivals have been centered around rock festivals that have started the trend in the country.

In addition to the well-known Ansan M Valley Pentaport, Jisan World Rock and Pusan International Rock, there are about seven to ten festivals held annually. As time goes on, the line-ups to these pop/rock festivals not only tap local bands and artists to perform on their stages, but also foreign and globally known ones as well. Bands like Maroon Five, Metallica, Radiohead, and Oasis are some of the bands that have headlined and popped up.

But, of course, with the ongoing popularity, electronic dance music (EDM), hip-hop, indie and jazz festivals have also made a mark in the music festival world on their own.
