Vanessa Hudgens and her boyfriend, actor Austin Butler, may face fines or jail time after allegedly carving their names and a heart into one of the rocks in the Red Rock Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest. The pair enjoyed a weekend away in Sedona.

On Sunday, Valentine's Day, Hudgens posted a photo on her Instagram page of a heart carved into red rock. The photo showed the names Vanessa and Austin.

"Happy Valentine's Day boo boo bears," Vanessa captioned photo. Hudgens but later removed it.

Hudgens' Instagram post was ranked at number 14 in Celebrity Valentine's Day Content, which brought it to the attention of authorities.

Hudgens is being investigated for violating a federal law against "damaging natural surfaces or property of the United States."

There are still other photos with the hash tag "sedonadreams" on the site.

The Coconino National Forest manages land around Sedona. A federal law prohibits anyone from damaging natural surfaces or property of the United States. As the investigation is ongoing, no charges have been filed for either party.

Coconino National Forest spokesman Brady Smith says he was alerted to the posting by the media. He said authorities are looking into the incident.

"People make mistakes whether knowingly or unknowingly," Smith said.

The incident is "currently under investigation. It's a common occurrence in that area that we have a challenge with and we try to education people on."

Smith said he is not sure whether law enforcement has located a heart that matches the one posted by Hudgens within the forest's 250 square-mile Red Rock Ranger District.

Damaging a natural feature on U.S. Forest Service land is a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a maximum $5,000 fine.
