[EXCLUSIVE] Interview with LUNAFLY: "We're Just Having Fun Making Music"

During their visit to Singapore recently, KpopStarz had the chance to have a group interview with the boys of LUNAFLY. Sam, the leader, and the other two members, Teo and Yun talked about doing street performances, their relationship with LC9 and what makes them different from other kpop groups, among other things.

Debuting with the acoustic sound of "How Nice Would It Be" (or the English version, Super Hero), it marked LUNAFLY as a group that is different from other Korean groups that are keen on electronic sounds and repetitive lyrics. When asked whether it was their choice to have a different sound from other kpop groups, Sam said that they were not trying to be different and it was not something that they had decided beforehand. "When we first started writing songs together, very naturally we wrote acoustic songs and after that, we decided to keep it like that because to us that's what sounded the best. We just want to make it simple and let the melody talk for themselves." He also added that as an artist, it is important to experiment, where he mentioned that even though their first two title songs were acoustics, there were other sounds too in the single albums. Even their most recent release, "Fly to Love," has a synth sound.

Having only been in the music scene for eight months and therefore still considered a rookie group, Teo said that they don't feel any particular difficulties in terms of being a new group. "To be honest, either we're experienced or rookies, we're just having fun making music." And when asked to rate their own music, he commented, "It's hard for us to rate our own music because it's for other people to decide."

When they first debuted, LUNAFLY went on a route that was rarely taken by Korean groups where they decided not to have any broadcast activities, preferring to focus on their live performances where they performed in small cafes and sometimes street performances as well. It was only recently with the release of Fly to Love that they went on music shows for promotion purposes. When asked on what is their next plan for promotions, Sam said that they wanted to try and do everything they can. He commented, "Some people thought doing TV is much better but for us, performing in cafes was where we built our first fanbase," He also said that he loved it when he realized that people keep coming back and the crowd is getting bigger and bigger. Yun chimed in and said, " We really missed street performances because it's such a natural environment. If people want to watch you, they can stay and if they want to go, they can go." All three of them expressed wanting to do street performances sometime soon.

You would have thought that not being fluent in English would mean that it's a challenge for Yun and Teo to learn English songs, but apparently it did not take them very long to learn. Sam commented, "They're actually faster than me! And I think they're unique in that sense because they listen to English songs since they were young. They don't really speak English but when they sing in English, it sounds so natural." Both Yun and Teo agreed that learning Korean songs are harder than learning English songs.

When asked on their relationship with the eldest member Sam, Yun commented, "There are situations where I see Sam as a brother and there are situations where I see him as a friend," while Teo thought of Sam as their team leader, in which Sam agreed that the leader side of him is quite strong. During the interview session, they also talked about their relationship with LC9, a new group that debuted under Nega Network, on May 9. Sam mentioned that they had known the members for two to three years, so they are all like little brothers to him. When asked whether LC9 is LUNAFLY's rival, Teo commented by saying, "It's hard to say that they're rivals because their concept is different from ours." Yun added, "We just happen to debut earlier than them but we're going on the same (musical) journey." When asked whether they gave advices to the members of LC9, Teo said, "They had actually been training for a long time but because we had done a little more than they had done (in the music industry), we just told them of things that we had experienced."
