Right after the pilot episode of "The Liar and His Lover" aired, netizens were straight to the point that Joy's acting skill wasn't good enough to earn her a lead role. According to Allkpop, people on the internet have been harshly criticized Joy over her debut performance as an actress in "The liar and His Lover". Many people argued that the Red Velvet member still looked awkward to play the role of a high school girl.

A commenter even said that Joy's acting skill made her cringe and she shouldn't be given lead roles for her debut in acting.  While Joy has been receiving so much hates for her first performance in "The Liar and His Lover", a lot of her fans urged people not to give her a hard time. "This is her first drama, why are people being so hard on her? She's not meant to be an actress, give her some time to learn," wrote a fan countering the critics.

Red Velvet's Joy is not the only one who has been the subject of criticism from netizens. Joy's co-star, Lee Hyun Woo, was also slammed because netizens think that his acting skill wasn't good enough. Even though a lot of people don't think the pair makes a good performance in the drama, Lee Hyun Woo and Joy have pulled off a strong chemistry that everyone should look forward to in the next episodes.

Soompi reported Red Velvet's Joy and Lee Hyun Woo share the same impression that their chemistry in "The Liar and His Lover" is off the chart. Joy, in a special occasion, admitted that she actually had a hard time when she met Lee Hyun Woo for the first time just because she felt awkward to maintain eye-contact with the actor. However, the two quickly adjusted being in each other's company.
