Cannes Approves of Ryan Gosling’s Co-Star Kristin Scott Thomas, But Not Her Movie: “Only God Forgives” Booed at Festival

Ryan Gosling did not make it to the premiere of his new film "Only God Forgives," directed by Winding Refn, at the Cannes Film Festival - but Kristin Scott Thomas did.

Gosling's co-star smiled for the cameras at the French Riviera and looked radiant on the sunny Wednesday. If only the audience at Cannes felt the same way about Scott Thomas as they did about her new movie.

The auditorium echoed with boos during the premier of "Only God Forgives," a hyper-violent, blood-spattered revenge story set in Bangkok, Thailand. According to Yahoo! News, the audience found the film too gory and the script laughable at times.

Scott Thomas plays Crystal, a mother who demands retribution for the death of her favorite son. Scott Thomas told reporters during the Cannes press conference that she was wary of the role at first.

"This kind of film is really not my thing," she said. "Films where this kind of violence happens I don't enjoy watching."

According to Yahoo! News, Scott Thomas decided to take on the character in order to work with Winding Refn, and to "play this wild, savage person" in this "disturbing" film.

Scott Thomas wore a belted, pale pink shift dress, a pastel-yellow floral blazer, and metallic Louboutins. The actress kept her hands in her pockets and her elbows resting behind her as she smiled in front of the cameramen at the French Riviera. The 52-year-old posed beside co-stars Vithaya Pansringar and Rhatha Phongam, as well as director Winding Refn.

Ryan Gosling's absence was felt at the festival. According to The Globe and Mail, Cannes director Thierry Frémaux read a letter from Gosling in which he apologized for not being able to attend. Gosling is in Detroit shooting "How to Catch a Monster," the first film he has directed.

"Only God Forgives" is in the running with 20 other films for the festival's top Palme d'Or prize.
