Lyricist JQ calls EXO’s Chen as Best Idol Lyricist

JQ talked about the artists and idols he has worked for during his guesting at the radio program Idol Radio, and he took a particular moment to commend the Nation's Pick's member for his lyric-writing prowess. He also revered him as the best idol lyricist he's worked with.

"Chen taps into his emotions very well and the words in his heart are extraordinary. If not handled right, it could lead to lyrics that most people won't get, but if you set yourself in a good direction, it can lead to amazing lyrics. Chen is someone with extraordinary potential," he shared.

JQ has written well-received songs like Tempo, Power, and Ko Ko Bop by EXO, Love Should Go On by SHINee, Holiday by Girls' Generation, Bad Boy by Red Velvet, Way Back Home by Shaun, Superhuman and Simon Says by NCT 127.

When he was asked which among these songs made him the recipient of a colossal chunk of royalties, JQ revealed that it's EXO's Tempo.

"Of my recent income, 'Tempo' is responsible for about 25 percent of it," he disclosed.

"It was a family honor. My parents were so happy and said, 'It's an amazing thing that lyrics that our son wrote were heard by people all around the world.' I felt proud that I could move people with lyrics of a dance track," he explained.

The lyricist doesn't solely work for artists from SM Entertainment as he had worked on the song Open Up for Produce 101 Season 2.

"Though they were young, we wanted to show a little sexiness through the song. At the time, Kang Daniel performed with a bandaged hand, and I thought he looked so cool," JQ said.

And apart from being a renowned lyricist, JQ is also known as a rap teacher. He also opened up about this during his guesting on the radio show.

"After working on the rap for SHINee's 'Love Should Go On,' I worked with EXO, f(x), and Red Velvet members. I checked their pronunciation and had them perform popular rap verses to work on their weaknesses," he shared.
