Four Foreign Idols that Received Criticism Due to their Appearance

As K-Pop becomes more popular and in demand, not only in South Korea but internationally too, the search for the next idol trainees and rookies is now a worldwide event and phenomenon. However, not everyone appreciates the diversity of their favorite group's foreign members. Here's a list of non-Korean idols who got criticized and hated on for their looks and physical appearances. 

1. Jeon Somi

The former I.O.I member now turned soloist had her fair deal of criticism and negative comments from netizens due to her mix race and unusually foreign looks. Somi's dad, Matthew Douma, has shared before in an episode of KBS 2TV's "Happy Together" that his daughter has experienced hardships due to her very foreign physical attributes that make her stand out and picked on during her childhood. Somi confessed in the same show that she wanted to get plastic surgery so severely, her Canadian roots gave her straight and high nose lin. She also had a natural brunette hair color, which was lighter than most Asians, and another factor that made her a target of bullying was her obesity as a child. 

2.  BlackPink Lisa

Lisa received a lot of racist hate comments under her social media accounts after the 33rd Golden Disc Award in Seoul, comments that target her Thai ethnicity seen under Instagram posts of the event. Korean netizens comments such as, "With makeup on, she looks like a Russian elf... but with darker hair and no makeup, she looks like any average Thai woman." Other commenters keep advising her to "go back to your hometown Lisa, no offense, but Koreans don't like you." The artist and her company, Y.G. Entertainment, has yet to make a statement regarding this racial hate.  

3. (G)I-DLE Shuhua

The youngest member of (G)I-DLE has been on the receiving end of many hate comments regarding her Appearance. After keeping her silence since their debut, Shuhua has finally posted a reply on her official Weibo account. She explained that she likes being comfortable, and it shows in how she prefers not doing her makeup all the time or not having her manicure done or dyeing her hair into a different color. She continues that although she gets hate on, she won't let it hinder her growth with self-love. 

4. Kyla Massie

Before the disbandment of PRISTIN, the former girl group member was actively criticized and hated on because of her weight. Heaps of malicious comments from Korean netizens picked on her unsteady weight every time Kyla had a scheduled activity. It got to a point where the idol herself spoke up about the continuous body-shaming and cyberbullying she was experiencing. She tweeted on her twitter account that when she was younger, she would take it personally whenever someone said hateful things to her. It made her reserved and insecure. However, she realized that she was beautiful in her way and that she'll own that fact. She'll continue to become the inspiration that other people who were like her needs. She ended the tweet with "Love yourself."
