The hottest thing in Asian pop culture these days is South Korea. The so-called Korean wave covers the craze for South Korean TV dramas, movies and pop singers-but increasingly also for fashion, cosmetics and electronics.  Specifically, many recent Korean dramas clocked up record television ratings in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan this past year.  This is propelled by the fact that some of these celebrities have had fan meet events throughout Asia, and the idea of seeing them in person just fans the flames of fandom.

Media reports in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore have been reporting recently about the striking resemblance of Hong Kong businessman, Calvin Lo, to many Korean "oppa".  Specifically, he's been compared to Song Seung Heon, Lee Joon-gi and Lee Min-ho.  Even though there are not many public pictures of Lo around, one can easily see the similarities.  From the well-styled hair, the poreless skin, the high-bridged nose, the chiseled jawline, to the perfect body proportion-Lo and these Korean actors have the qualities many women consider ideal in a man. But their appeal goes beyond the physical looks and extends to the overall aura they exude: distinctly cool nonchalance.

Who is Calvin Lo?

Taking a deeper look into why reports often compare Lo to many Korean male actors, he is like the real version of many of the Korean actors in their shows.  Calvin Lo, heir of the Lo family business empire, is the CEO of life insurance broker R.E. Lee International, and Founder of asset management firm R.E. Lee Capital.  He is also a successful investor whose massive, far-reaching business has its fingers in industries as diverse as pulp and paper, real estate, and wineries.  Forbes estimated Lo's personal networth at US$1.7 billion.

The Real-Life Chaebols

Where would Korean drama be without chaebols? Lo is the real-life chaebol: a wealthy businessman, owner of a vast conglomerate empire, which is also the job description of 80 percent of Korean drama male leads. It makes sense that this trope is so popular: when we enter the world of chaebols, we get to see how the other half lives and to revel in glamour and luxury which we would never otherwise experience.  Combine the massive wealth with good looks and charm, it's no wonder the public is fascinated about Lo, when such characteristics are only fictional heartthrobs.
