SuperM Faces Backlash Due to Alleged Colorist Joke Controversy About Lucas
Even fans and supporters of SuperM are disappointed. On Thursday, snippets from episode seven of SuperM’s reality show “Mtopia,” circulated on various social media platforms that divided the opinions and views of their fans as well as netizens.
In the video, the septet, including EXO’s Baekhyun and Kai, SHINee Taemin, NCT Taeyong, Ten, Lucas, and Mark, were seen heading to their next destination as part of their show.
While staying inside their car, the members allegedly made colorist jokes about Lucas, which anger several Lumis (Lucas’ fandom) as well as NCTzens.
In particular, the issue broke out due to the statement made by the members, which seemed to be triggered to accuse the members of joking about the color of Lucas.
Taeyong, who is sitting in front, started the conversation by saying, “ You know what is funny? Because that side has no lighting…”
Even before finishing his funny thought, Mark picked up what is Taeyong wanted to pertain and said, “I can’t see Lucas side because it is so dim (in other translation, Mark says, ‘Lucas is quite invisible.’)” The video editor apparently agreed that the lighting is dark because of the side comment, “Almost a tunnel.”
Lucas looked so confused and turned into their leader Baekhyun, who also agreed and said, “Lucas is hard to see.”
The members laugh, and Lucas, who is flustered, only tried to shield his face while racing his arms and luckily, Kai changed the subject and said, “This car takes forever to make a U-turn.”
As the video circulated online, the opinions about the controversy were divided. As the fandom consists of EXO-Ls (EXO’s fandom), Shawols (SHINee’s fandom), and NCTzens (NCT fandom), some were defending the members, while others were extremely angered and disappointed by it.
According to those who think they indeed made a colorist joke, the members knew that Lucas and Kai are the members who are tan and have a darker skin tone among the members.
Though Baekhyun and Taemin, who have fair skin, are sitting on the darker part (backseats of the car) as well, the members allegedly turn into Lucas only.
Also, some netizens are throwing negative remarks to Baekhyun and Mark as well for mentioning Lucas when Taeyong didn’t say any name yet. The other fandom should know better, especially Baekhyun, as Kai went to the same colorist controversy, who also seemingly tried to change the topic immediately.
Meanwhile, other fans are also frustrated with Taemin and Ten, who only laugh about the matter and are trying to educate them already.
On the other hand, other fans debunk the issue, as Korean fans who can clearly speak Korean said that though there is no wrong with the translation, the context of their statements clearly pertains to the lighting especially to the side of Lucas.
It is revealed that there are some building boxes that are blocking the side of Lucas, which explains why the members can’t see him due to the lack of light on his side.
Though Taemin and Baekhyun are beside Lucas, there is a light on the other window that makes them visible compared to Lucas' side.
