BLACKPINK Becomes First Korean Girl Group to be Million Sellers
BLACKPINK has become the first million-seller K-pop girl group, selling more than 1.2 million copies of their first full-length album 'THE ALBUM'. The girls continue to boast their international popularity as they continue to break records in the industry.
According to YG Entertainment on October 26, Monday, BLACKPINK's 'THE ALBUM' has sold over 1,209,543 copies so far. About 871,355 copies were in South Korea and 319,300 copies were sold in the United States and Europe. Additionally, 18,888 limited-edition LPs were sold out early.
No K-pop girl group has sold more than 1 million copies until now Not even in the 1990s and early 2000s. The highest tally for Korean girl groups was about 760,000 copies of albums sold. BLACKPINK has made history by being K-pop first-ever all-female million sellers.
BLACKPINK's 'THE ALBUM' showed off irreplaceable presence on various global charts, both digital and physical.
'THE ALBUM' topped the iTunes Album Charts in 57 countries around the world shortly after the release of the digital album back on October 1. 'THE ALBUM' ranked second on the U.S. Billboard 200 Charts and the United Kingdom's official album charts, making them the highest-charting Korean girl group in the West.
BLACKPINK's album sales prove they are one of the top female groups around the world this decade. Billboard announced previously that BLACKPINK's 'THE ALBUM' is the highest-ranking album for a girl group for the first time in twelve years. The last girl group to hit a record was Danity Kane with their album 'Welcome to the Dollhouse'.
The album's title track, 'Lovesick Girls', also proved its international popularity by topping the global YouTube Song Top 100 charts for the second consecutive week in a row. The song also topped the world's largest music streaming platform Spotify's Global Top 50 Chart.
Additionally, the song 'Ice Cream' with Selena Gomez has been in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the United Kingdom's Official Singles Top 100 for seven to eight consecutive weeks respectively, becoming the longest-charting K-pop girl group song on the two countries pop charts.
BLACKPINK's 'THE ALBUM' is expected to be in the top 10 of the U.S. Billboard 200 Chart, which will be updated this week. If so, BLACKPINK will be the first K-pop girl group to make it in the top 10 of the Billboard's Main Album Chart for three consecutive weeks.
'THE ALBUM' is the first full-length studio album of BLACKPINK. It was released on October 1 KST and became available for pre-order on August 27 KST. It was released nearly a year and four months after 'Kill This Love' (2019). 'THE ALBUM' has eight new songs and explores the group's more mature side, singing about love and growing up. 'THE ALBUM' utilized hip-hop, pop, trap, and EDM elements. 'THE ALBUM' was praised by music critics, with people complimenting BLACKPINK's vocal ability and the album's stylistic variety.
