Every once and a while in pop singer comes along that sounds totally different than everyone else.

It is rare that the singer is mostly known as an actress.

Such is the case with "Saturday Night Live Korea" cast member Kim Seul Ki.

Kim has a voice that can sound smooth and even Beatles-esque like it does in her earlier hit "You Wake Me Up" or like a Bollywood version of Britney Spears, like in her new single "Rude Girl."

"Rude Girl" is a scream, with a hypnotic hip-hop groove that hooks the listener from the first second.

But the moment Kim Seul Ki enters with a vocal that sounds like an Indian-classical singer on a bender, it is clearly time to get the party started, quickly.

Kim's "SNL Korea" cast mate Jay Park is also in top form, letting loose a dizzying torrent of words during the rap that is his sole contribution to the song.

But the star of "Rude Girl" is clearly Kim Seul Ki, who delivers a performance that somehow sounds both ancient and of the current moment.

Kim uses an almost indigenous vocal sound to turn the track into a dance floor stomper.

In the same way that Britney Spears distinguished herself from the vocal acrobatics of the pop divas of her day like Jessica Simpson and Christina Aguilera by exhaling her vocals in a lower, growly register, Kim stakes out new ground in the pop music world.

It would be incomplete to say that there isn't another voice like hers in K-pop.

There isn't another singer like her anywhere in pop music, an unfathomable compliment for an actress-turned singer.

The basements of Hollywood stars are littered with the failed attempts of crossover success.

So what is it about Kim that makes her voice so different? What is it about that voice that draws the listener in instantly?

Maybe the answer is in her acting.

For anyone that has seen her on "SNL Korea" or even just in a music video, there is something about Kim Seul Ki that makes it impossible to look away.

It is not that she is the most stunningly gorgeous woman out there. Kim is beautiful, but that is not it.

Like all great actors, she is able to draw you into her world. Yet, somehow, this concept also extends to her singing.
