Aespa’s 'Black Mamba' Rated Extremely Low by Korean Netizens on Melon

On Wednesday, Nov. 18, SM Entertainment released Aespa's debut song "Black Mamba" on all music sites and platforms. For the South Korean music streaming platform Melon, fans can rate how much they like the song from 1 to 5. Ever since the song was released, Korean netizens have been rating the song extremely low. Read to learn more about the situation.

It has only been a day since Aespa debuted with "Black Mamba." Despite that, the song already has over 20,000 reviews on Melon, one of South Korea's biggest music streaming platforms. However, reviews are far from favorable. Despite the number of reviews, the rating of "Black Mamba" averages only 1.6 stars.

Korean netizens are comparing Aespa's reviews to other big girl groups. Their labelmate, Red Velvet, achieved a rating of 4.3 stars with nearly 25,000 reviews for their song "Psycho." Oh My Girl's breakout song, "NONSTOP," achieved 4.0 stars on Melon with over 27,000 reviews. BLACKPINK's whole full-length album, "THE ALBUM," achieved 4.1 stars with over 19,000 reviews.

A notable girl group with a fairly low rating is TWICE with their full-length studio album "Eyes Wide Open." The album achieved a rating of 3.4 stars with over 15,000 reviews. Still, that is a far cry from Aespa's rating of 1.6 stars with over 20,000 reviews.

Netizens are speculating that SM Entertainment antis are rating the song low due to the company's plagiarism controversy. Recently, SM Entertainment was accused of copying Bryan Hyunh, a Toronto-based photographer for Aespa's member reveal teaser.

"SME antis are so enthusiastic and are working so hard."

"I gave them 0.5 stars because of the plagiarism. One of the defining factors for idols is the concept. How can you give them 5 stars when you know that they explicitly copied the concept from someone else?"

"No matter how you look at it, only the members of Aespa are pitiful. SME, who was accused of plagiarism, is the one who is guilty."

"Only the members are pitiful. I hope they do well in the future."

"Since they are a plagiarism group, they deserve to have only 1 star."

It appears most Korean netizens feel pity for the new girl group. People are saying the song itself is good despite the plagiarism controversy, and many are coming out to say they gave the song five stars.

Read their comments below:

"If you think the music video is plagiarism, then press dislike on the music video. The song itself was not plagiarized, but why are you giving them such low scores?"

"This is crazy. They have over 20,000 reviews but only 1.6 stars. There are so many weird people."

"The song is good. Aespa, I support you."

"Aespa, fighting! I hope they never see the bad comments."

"This is crazy... I gave them five stars."
