How Much Money Do Fans Spend for Idols? Studies Reveal the Top Spender Fandoms

As a K-pop fan, how much are you willing to spend on your idols? See what the studies say!

According to studies, each K-pop fan can spends up to an average of $1,422 (about 1.57 million KRW) for their favorite K-pop idols. In particular, an overseas market research company, iPrice, analyzed and released the ranking of the world's most expensive expenditure of a K-pop fan in November.

As a result, BTS fandom called ARMY topped the list. TWICE's fan club ONCEs then ranked second and BLACKPINK's fanbase BLINKs claimed the third spot.

Top Spender K-Pop Fandoms

Among K-pop fans around the world, ARMY, the fandom of the global group BTS is revealed to be the fandom that spends the most money. According to studies, ARMYs spend an average of $545 (about 600,000 won) per person for BTS goods, $541 (about 590,000 won) for concert tickets, and $336 (about 370,000 won) for BTS albums.

In addition to this, the commerce aggregator also discovered that an ARMY who consume cash for the group has at least 15 albums and has purchased at least five concert tickets.

iPrice added, "BTS passionate fans spent an average of $1,422 per person." BTS is gaining popularity all over the world, becoming the first Korean to top the U.S. Billboard singles chart, "Hot 100" and the first foreigner to top the Japanese Oricon chart for the first half of the year.

With the purchasing power of ARMYs, this proved that BTS is not only influential for their music, but they also got loyal and stable fandom that invest for them to show their love and support.

On the other hand, it was revealed that aside from concert tickets and albums, fans spent a lot of their money on K-pop merchandise.

Indeed, the K-pop goods in this modern era don't only focus on conventional merchandise, but entertainment companies now also offered phone cases, clothing, home decorations, and lomo cards.

Meanwhile, TWICE's fandom ONCEs is the second fandom who spend money the most on their idols.

ONCEs can spend an average of $824 (about 910,000 won) per person. Unlike ARMY, the amount used for goods was relatively small ($173), while $446 (about 490,000 won) and $205 (about 220,000 won) were spent on concert tickets and albums, respectively.

iPrice says a TWICE fan has collected an average of 14 albums and bought more than four concert tickets. Undoubtedly, TWICE is enjoying great popularity especially in Asia, with sales of Korean and Japanese albums exceeding 10 million this year that it's not a surprise that a lot of fans spend much money on the multi-talented idols.

Last but not the least, BLACKPINK fandom BLINK is the third top spender among K-pop fandoms, following ARMY and ONCE.

An average fan spent $665 (about 730,000 won) and by item, it was $349 (about 380,000 won), $161 for albums, and 155 dollars (about 170,000 won) for concert tickets.

Although BLINK fell behind ARMY and ONCE, it was influential considering that there were not many albums and concert schedules released by the group, due to the relatively short period of activity. Just recently, BLACKPINK released their first full-length album, "THE ALBUM" and ranked second on the Billboard album chart in October, and was able to be the first million-seller girl group with their cumulative album sales. Also, they are the second-most-subscribed singer on YouTube after Justin Bieber, as well.

K-pop Dominates the Export Records this 2020

K-pop set an all-time high export record this year. According to the Korea Customs Service, Korea's record exports reached $170 million in the January-November period, up 94.9 percent from a year earlier.

Compared to 2017, which was three years ago, it has quadrupled. In addition, the global K-pop fan base is expanding from Asia, including Japan and China, to the U.S., Europe, and South America. The number of K-pop record exporting countries increased from 78 in 2017 to 114 this year.
