KARD BM Shares How J.Y. Park and Yang Hyun Suk Told Him He's Too Late to Become an Idol

KARD's BM recently talked about how J.Y. Park and Yang Hyun Suk rejected him when he participated in K-pop Star 1.

K-pop Star is a reality TV competition series where three South Korean entertainment companies: YG Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, and SM Entertainment held worldwide auditions to find individuals who have the potential to become idols. The judges of the show initially included Yang Hyun Suk, founder of YGE; J.Y. Park, founder and CEO of JYPE; and BoA, a well-known pioneering female singer from SME.

The first season of K-pop Star kicked off on Dec. 4, 2011, and among the contestants of the reality program is Matthew Kim, who is now KARD's BM. On the most recent episode of the "Get Real" podcast that airs on Dive Studio YouTube channel, the male idol shared how his auditions in K-pop star was like.

KARD BM Shares His Experience When He Auditioned for K-pop Star

BM started his story by saying that he had stage fright in his first couple auditions for K-pop Star, and because of that, he forgot the lyrics to the songs he was performing. Ashley Choi asked him if that was his first time, and in response, he said, "That was the first time I ever did anything vocally. I was rapping and freestyling, and doing whatever I like; parties and whatnot, garages, like turning on the speaker. But I never held a mic before in my life."

KARD's BM went on to share how his lack of Korean language skills added to his stress during his performance on stage, and that caused him to forget lyrics. After hearing it, Ashley Choi commented on how intimidating and scary it must have been to have stood on stage while there were many cameras and the judges were in front of him, to which the rapper agreed.

The male idol then shared the words the two well-known record producers said to him after he performed, and how he responded to it. BM said, "Oh my gosh! Like JYP and YG, when I was done, they were like, 'How old are you?' I was like, '21.' They were like, 'You have no hope [to go] further. You're too late.'"

Because of shock, Ashley Choi asked, "They said that?" Then, BM replied, "Yeah. They're like 'You're a little bit too late to be on this stage right now.' And I was like, 'You right. You right,'" at which they all laugh.

What Happened to BM After He Was Rejected by J.Y. Park and Yang Hyun Suk?

Although he got negative comments from the producers of JYP and YG entertainment agencies, BoA, who was also a judge at that time, saved him three times and still encouraged him to pursue his dream of becoming an idol. And even though he didn't win in the first season of K-pop Star, he continued to train in Korea for four and a half years before he made his debut as KARD's main dancer and lead rapper in July 2017 under DSP Media.
