BLACKPINK Jennie's "SOLO" is the Most Popular Song by a K-Pop Soloist on Genius
Taking the throne is South Korea's "It Girl" herself, Jennie of BLACKPINK, with her solo debut, "SOLO." "SOLO" was released on Nov. 12, 2018. According to Jennie, "SOLO" wanted to express showing your true self after a break-up. During her debut showcase, Jennie said, "When you are dating someone, you tend to present yourself in the way the other person wants rather than your true self. I wanted to express that feeling. Rather than the heart being wounded after a break-up, I wanted to express myself more freely."
Kang Kyung Yoon from SBS also noted that the song follows two themes — a weak, introverted girl and an independent and strong woman.
"SOLO" debuted at the top on the Gaon Digital Chart and stayed within the top ten for thirteen consecutive weeks. "SOLO" was the 35th best-performing song of 2019 in South Korea. In the United States, "SOLO" debuted at the top of the World Digital Song Sales Chart.
