Chilean TV "Mi Barrio" Gives Apology After Making Racist Skit About BTS

On April 12, Chilean TV show "Mi Barrio" came under fire for making racists jokes and performing a racist skit about BTS on its show.

In the show's parody - which features the cast acting as BTS, wearing clothes similar to theirs from the "DNA" era and hair from the "Boy With Luv" era, they can be seen acting as if they were on a late-night show.

When the host asked the cast to introduce themselves, they began saying their names were "Kim Jong One" because "uno" means "one" and is similar to the North Korean dictator's name, Kim Jong Un. The rest of the cast said their names were "Kim Jong Two," "Kim Jong Three," "Kim Jong Four," and "Juan Carlos."

When the host asked them to speak Korean, one of the cast began speaking Chinese and said that he got the vaccine when asked what he meant.

The skit angered many fans worldwide for their racist remarks and overall racist skit. Fans began demanding an official apology and explanation on social media from the Chilean TV show regarding their behavior.

On April 13, Chilean channel Mega, where the show is being aired, issued an official apology on their Twitter account.

The channel explains that humor is a way to deal with difficult moments, especially in this time of the pandemic. The channel adds that the limits in humor are stated in their broadcasting orientations and are of public knowledge.

However, they apologize to the community as it was never their intention to offend, insult or harm anyone by the skit done in "El late de Raquel," and that they want to manifest their absolute empathy to those affected by the incident.

They end their apology by saying that they will keep on improving, learning, and listening to bring entertainment to families and that they welcome all positive comments and critiques to further improve their behavior.

In addition, the country's National Television Council had received more than a thousand complaints regarding the show's skit after fans had reported and signed a petition regarding the show.

The Chilean National Television Council will be working on analyzing the claims in accordance with their current regulations and will make a report of the case, if necessary, to be discussed within the Council.
